Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that affects how people communicate, interact with others, and experience the world around them. People with ASD may experience difficulty with social skills, communication, and behavior.

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) can be used to treat children, adolescents and adults with ASD. Components of ABA include:

  • Setting goals: Identify what skills you want to teach, such as communication or social skills

  • Breaking skills down: Break skills into small steps making them easier to learn.

  • Structured teaching: Use consistent routines and clear instructions during teaching sessions.

  • Positive reinforcement: Praise or reward desired behaviors to encourage them to happen again.

  • Tracking progress: Keep track of how the person is doing to see what's working and what needs to change.

  • Generalization: Help the person use their new skills in different places and situations.

  • Involving caregivers: Work with family and caregivers to support the person's progress outside of therapy sessions.

  • Adjusting as needed: Change the approach as the person learns and grows.
